A tour behind the town, organized by Outdoor Spezia, takes hikers to visit one of the so-called Colli – “hills” of La Spezia, Monte di Santa Croce, that on the inside hides the most essential geophysical characteristics of the area: the veins of Portoro stone and multiple natural phenomena : from the karstic ones (sinkholes, rutted fields, fields boulders …) to the botanical ones, such as protected orchids and forests of oak.
Even human works are not without charm, like the ways di lizza, paths along which were lowered the blocks of limestone and the remains of military fortifications in defense of the Arsenal, which then have become roads. You’ll also have the chance to admire the only battery where you can still see the artillery pieces. In addition, the small but significant small monastery of the Madonna dell’Olmo, so important for the local devotion, and the mysterious House Pilloa.
We recommend the use of hiking boots.
