The San Giuseppe Fair 2018 arrives, “highlight” of spring in the city, celebrating San Giuseppe patron, with its long-awaited white night of music and museums.
From almost all the La Spezia people the Fair is expected with trepidation: tradition has it that it abounds porchetta, sausages, crispy, zeppole and brigidini. The fair announces that spring is now full, that begins the most beautiful season to stay out and enjoy the days that stretch.
The 2018 fair will take place between Saturday 17 and Monday 19 March between 8am and 8pm, on the occasion of “the white Saturday night”, the stalls will remain open until 10pm, with music in the squares and museums open.
For those new to the Fair, but not only for them, it is useful to know that the 588 stalls will be installed in almost all the streets of the center between Via Chiodo and Piazza Verdi and the sea, the public gardens to Largo Fiorillo, where the Cruise Terminal is located. New this year, the Consortium of Farinata from Saturday 17 to Monday 19 will be present with its stand, along with the stand of Pro Loco Cadimare that will offer fried anchovies and sgabei. Sunday, March 18 it will be possible to participate in “Firma e pesta“, the campaign for the promotion of Pesto Genovese as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
The history of San Giuseppe Fair has its roots in the commercial tradition of the city
Probably the feast of the patron saint in La Spezia was introduced around 1650, when the small shopping center faced a crisis due to the plague, spread throughout Europe (although the city was not affected). Already at the end of the 1300s in Spezia there was a two-day trade fair (most likely dedicated to San Cipriano) mentioned in the Statutes of the City of 1407 confirming the already strong commercial vocation in the small town center since the Middle Ages. In 1650, however, it was asked in Genoa to allow a market to reactivate “the businesses” in town, which Genoa granted, even with a particular reduction in taxes to be paid to the Republic.
