On June 18 will take place the fried Monterosso anchovies Festival, like every year near the Feast of the Patron day, Saint John. The choice of the month of June, as the the inhabitants of Monterosso know, is also related to the period prior to the day of St. Peter (June 29), during which the best of the local bluefish fishing trips are possible. It seems that the anchovies come from the Straits of Gibraltar, in May are in France, then they they arrive in the Western Liguria and precisely at the end of May in the Cinque Terre area.
This food and wine festival offers visitors the opportunity to taste the delicious quality of the Monterosso anchovy, which for the different salinity of the sea have a very balanced taste: they are tasty but delicate. U pan du ma (the sea bread) is among the most used ingrefients in the local cuisine: salted, green, stuffed, marinated or simply fried.
For the occasion, the anchovies are fried as usual, in the typical iron pan-shaped fish pan and served with the local white wine. What better occasion, then, to visit Monterosso, Cinque Terre village that lies in one of the most beautiful bays of the area, with a wide beach, a view to the east of Punta Mesco, and adorned by many olive groves, lemon trees and grapes.
